Transport, particularly air transport, has been a critical driving force in the development of tourism, globalization, and the elimination of borders. The industry is traditionally volatile and capital-intensive, making it vulnerable to economic and political crises. The course aims to explore issues related to the development and structure of aviation and its relationship with tourism policy, laying the groundwork for future research approaches. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: Recognize the contribution of transport, particularly air transport, to economic and tourism development, with an emphasis on the Greek air transport industry and development policies. Understand the organizational and administrative framework of airline operations, as well as the characteristics of scheduled, charter, and low-cost carriers (LCCs). Students will also learn about the correlation and interactions of different types of air transport and the tourism that develops in a tourist destination. Distinguish between various types of international multilateral conferences and conventions, bilateral air transport agreements, interline agreements, and the SCHENGEN Treaty. Recognize the freedoms of the air in the field of air transport and discern the impact of liberalization on airline operations. Students will also learn about the levels of post-liberalization competition in aviation today. Understand and distinguish the functions of governmental organizations, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the European Convention for the Safety of Air Traffic (EUROCONTROL), the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), and the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA). Understand and distinguish the functions of non-governmental organizations, such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Association of European Airlines (AEA), and the European Regions Airlines Association (ERA). Familiarize themselves with the operation of airline alliances, recognize strategic alliance and merger trends, and understand the general institutional framework. Students will also recognize the advantages and disadvantages of airline alliances and mergers, from the perspective of both the operator (airline) and tourists. Analyze, compile, and evaluate the requirements for the issuance of e-tickets, the IATA Pricing and Settlement Plan (BSP), and the relationship between BSP-agents and airlines. Understand the operation mode and characteristics of private and public airports, the characteristics of airports in Greece, and their role in economic development. Familiarize themselves with the passenger and handling agent service functions. Analyze, compile, and evaluate handling requirements required for flight delay, damage or loss of baggage, assistance to passengers with disabilities or mobility problems, as well as familiarity with airline quality and safety issues. Apply all of the above when issuing an air ticket, taking into account all the restrictions and regulations of the International Air Transport Association. Recognize the contribution of land transport, particularly road and rail transport, to economic and tourism development. Students will learn about development policies at the European and international level. Understand the organizational and administrative framework of the operation of coastal shipping companies. Recognize the contribution of coastal shipping to economic and tourism development. In summary, the course explores the development and structure of aviation and its relationship with tourism policy. Students will gain an understanding of airline operations, airport characteristics, airline alliances and mergers, handling requirements, and the role of land transport in economic and tourism development. With this knowledge, students will be able to apply the course content when issuing air tickets and recognizing the contributions of various modes of transport to economic and tourism development.
