Meteora is a complex of giant, breathtaking Paleolithic rocks 300 to 600 meters high, which, according to the prevailing theory, took their shape due to the water and emerged when the sea level fell. On the tops of these rocks, various monasteries have been built for many centuries and are really worth visiting.
Meteora is inextricably linked to monasticism due to its morphology. It was the ideal refuge for the monks during the Ottoman expansion in Greece, since the huge boulders provided safety. Today, Meteora is the largest monastic complex in Greece, after Mount Athos.
Today 6 monasteries are active, namely:
Holy Monastery of Roussanou
Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron
Holy Monastery of Varlaam
Holy Monastery of Holy Trinity
Holy Monastery of St. Stephen
Holy Monastery of St. Nikolaos
The monasteries of St. Stephen and Roussanou are inhabited by women while the other four are inhabited by men.
